In the last couple of years, cyber crime has increasingly expanded and is possibly one of the most complicated problems that the government and law enforcement agents within the country must deal every day. Cyber crime can be defined as the criminal action of dealing with computers and internet technologies against any individual or a state. Hate crimes like racism and cyber bulling, internet frauds, hacking into an other person system, identity theft and in general illegal activities commented by an individual by the use of a computer, is considered as cyber crime.
However, what is not clearly explained is that what is illegal offline, it is illegal online as well. For example, getting into a store and steal a CD is an offline crime…it is exactly the same crime when downloading unauthorised music from the internet.
Russia Lawyers vortal found that cyber crime can be divided into three categories:
1. against individuals.
2. against property.
3. against government.
Russia Lawyers provides its users with some terms used to describe particular cyber crime actions.
Hacking is a general term used to describe the unauthorised access in to a system or network. Hacking is the generic term used to describe such crimes.
Theft of electronic form information contains all the information that can be stored in computer hard disk, removable external hard disc, storage media and memory sticks etc.
E-mail bombarding is when someone sends a huge amount of e-mails to an individual or company resulting their the overload of the system and therefore the hole system crashes.
Salami attacks usually are used against financial institutions or in crimes involve financial information. What is interesting about salami attacks is that this type of feature is so small and carefully created that is usually pass in to the system unnoticed.
Denial of service attack is when the user’s computer tries to handle more requests than it can handle and therefore cause the computer to crash. This is a widespread attack which affects many computers across the globe.
Computer viruses are computer programs (software) that attach them selves to files stored on the computer and circulate to other files stored on the computer and pass themselves to other computes on the same network. Computer viruses can result the deletion or alteration of data stored on the computer.
Computer worms in contrast with viruses, is a self-duplicated malware computer program that uses network to sends multiple copy of its self. Worms are duplicate them selves constantly making functional copies on the computers hard drive till to full up the available space on the computer’s memory.
Logic bombs are event depended pieces of code stored in software’s meaning that they are only functional when the particular event occurs. For example a programmer may create a small piece of code and hide it into a programme and when the programme is used it will delete files stored.
Trojan horse computer attacks took their name from a story in the Greek mythology because of the way that attacking. It is an unauthorised software programme, stored and installed on the user’s computer. Trojan horse when successfully installed on someone’s computer is getting the systems control by representing itself as authorised computer programme. This is a criminal offence as this can lead to other crimes such as unauthorised access into someone’s private space through web cams and theft of personal data.
Web jacking is the term used to describe website offences, when the hacker takes the full control and access over someone’s website. When a hacker gets this access, he can then manipulate any information stored on the user’s website and change the website’s information. This can be seen as not harmful but it has already been used to fulfil political objectives in websites in the past and in some other cases it has been done for money.
A question that is frequently asked concerning computer crimes is ‘what has this to do with the law’? What is very logical for enforcement agencies, is what is illegal off line is illegal on line as well. Sending to a user’s machine pieces of software’s that can destroy its machine is very much like destroying someone’s property. Having unauthorised access into someone’s computer by sending hacking software’s to track user’s actions and get data and personal information like passwords for online banking it is illegal.
Now governments along with enforcement agencies are trying to find the most appropriate ways to regulate the internet and enforce more laws. However, this is a major task, as what is illegal in one country can be legal in another and therefore internet is even harder to be regulated.
Many government bodies in the country are doing their best in order to find ways for a safer environment and internet surfing. What we need to understand is that when using the internet we need to behave like we behave in our everyday lives, with respect to others and their rights.
